Seen from above, Ávila is defined by a single closed line. The medieval wall, one of the most complete in Europe, traces a long, irregular rectangle around the old town. Its dozens of round towers show up on the map as a beaded edge. Inside, lanes run short and crooked between small plazas, while the newer city grows outward in looser blocks to the east and south.
The city sits on a rise above the Adaja river, which runs along its western side. At over 1,100 metres, Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain.
