Azla is on the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco, a short distance east of Tétouan, where the Rif foothills come down almost to the water. From above, the town is a narrow band. The shoreline runs along one side, rising ground along the other, and a coastal road threads between them. Short streets run from the road down toward the beach, which gives the plan a comb-like rhythm.
The land around Azla shapes much of what you see on the map. Valleys cut down from the hills, small watercourses reach the sea, and farmed plots fill the flatter ground. Building gathers where the slope allows it and thins out quickly where it does not. As a result the built area has soft, irregular edges rather than a hard boundary.
