Azov sits on the left bank of the Don in Rostov Oblast, a few kilometres before the river breaks into its delta and enters Taganrog Bay. On the map the Don sweeps along the town's northern side, and beyond it lies a flat maze of channels, reed marsh and islands. The streets on the bank form a fairly regular grid.
The town's history is a history of the fortress. Greeks, Genoese traders and the Ottomans all held a stronghold near the river mouth. In 1695 and 1696 Peter the Great campaigned here to gain access to the south, and the capture of Azov became an early milestone in building the Russian navy.
Parts of the old earthen ramparts survive near the river and are still visible as angular lines in the town plan. An Azov map poster shows how much of the town's story is written into its geography. It sits at the last firm ground before the river loosens into water and wetland.
