D'Kaart
Bananal Island is not an island in the usual sense. It lies inland in Brazil's Tocantins state, enclosed by the Araguaia River on the west and its Javaés branch on the east, and it is widely described as the largest river island in the world. At roughly 19,000 square kilometres, it covers more ground than some countries, and all of it is bounded by fresh water rather than sea.
From above, the drawing is dominated by water that never quite settles. Both channels meander in tight loops, leaving crescent lakes and abandoned bends along their edges. The interior is threaded with smaller streams and ponds that swell during the rainy season. Roads are few, so a Bananal Island map poster reads almost entirely as hydrology: long, looping lines and scattered pools across open ground.
The island sits in the transition between the Cerrado savanna and the Amazon forest, and much of it is protected. Araguaia National Park occupies the northern part, and large areas are Indigenous territories of the Karajá and Javaé peoples, whose villages lie along the riverbanks. The result is a map of a landscape shaped by seasonal flooding rather than by planning.
The main Araguaia runs along the western side and the narrower Javaés along the east. The two meet again at the northern tip and close the outline of the island.
Along both rivers, cut-off meanders survive as crescent-shaped lakes. They give the edges of the map a fringe of curved shapes that show where the channels once flowed.
The interior is laced with minor streams and shallow lakes that expand with the rains, so the poster shows scattered water rather than roads or settlements.

Firwat Bananal Island
This is a map for people who find rivers more interesting than cities: travellers who have crossed the Araguaia, researchers of the Cerrado and the Amazon, or anyone drawn to places where water sets every boundary. The looping channels work well at large sizes, where the fine meanders stay legible.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a trip date or a village name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9 and include every print size, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
