Banská Bystrica sits in central Slovakia, where the Hron River runs through a valley ringed by mountains, among them the Low Tatras, the Kremnica Mountains and the Starohorské hills. On a map the town follows the shape of the river: the historic centre sits on a gentle rise just above the Hron, and housing districts climb the valley sides around it.
The town grew rich in the Middle Ages on copper and silver mining, and its elongated main square, now Námestie SNP, is lined with burgher houses and a leaning clock tower. In 1944 Banská Bystrica was the centre of the Slovak National Uprising, remembered today by a large memorial museum near the old walls.
