Bawshar is one of the wilayats of Muscat Governorate. It occupies the stretch of land between the rocky foothills of the Hajar Mountains and the coastal plain. The best-known landmark in the area is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, completed in 2001, whose large walled rectangle stands out clearly on a map. To the south, the land rises into dark, folded hills. There is also a field of sand dunes, a rare sight so close to the city, which is popular for recreation.
