Bayramaly sits in the Murghab oasis in southeastern Turkmenistan, at the edge of the Karakum Desert. The land around it is kept green by irrigation, and on a map the town is surrounded by a patchwork of fields and a network of canals and channels. Just outside the town lie the remains of ancient Merv, one of the great cities of the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ruins spread over a huge area, with the outlines of several successive walled cities, including the square fortress of Gyaur Kala and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar.
