Béjar is a town in the south of Salamanca province, set against the Sierra de Béjar. Its shape is unusual: the old town runs along a narrow ridge above the valley of the Cuerpo de Hombre river, so the street plan is long and thin, following the crest of the hill. Remains of the medieval walls and the Ducal Palace sit along that line.
For centuries Béjar was a textile town, and its former mills and factories line the river below the ridge. The town is also known for El Bosque, a sixteenth-century Renaissance villa with gardens and a large pond, built for the dukes of Béjar and now a protected historic site. The nearby mountains host the La Covatilla ski station.
