Belford Roxo is one of the municipalities of the Baixada Fluminense, the flat lowland north of Rio de Janeiro. It became a separate municipality in 1990, after splitting off from Nova Iguaçu. From above, it is a continuous spread of residential streets with no single centre, filling the space between its larger neighbours.
The land here is low and flat, crossed by small rivers and drainage channels that run toward Guanabara Bay.
