Bhor lies south of Pune, in a valley where the Nira river comes out of the hills of the Western Ghats. The town sits along the riverbank. Older lanes stay close to the water, and newer streets extend along the roads toward Pune and the surrounding villages. Ridges and forested slopes rise nearby and give the edges of the map a sense of enclosure.
Until shortly after independence, Bhor was the capital of a princely state of the same name, and its former rulers' palace still stands in the town. Upstream, the Bhatghar dam holds back a large reservoir on the Yelwandi river. The area is also a gateway to the hill forts and ghat roads of this part of Maharashtra.
