Seen from above, Bielefeld is shaped by the Teutoburg Forest, a long wooded ridge that runs diagonally through the city. Most of the city lies on the north-eastern side of it, where the streets fan out from a compact old town. The ridge has a gap in it, and the roads and railway squeeze through that pass, so the city's main transport lines are easy to pick out on the map.
The old town is a tight cluster of irregular lanes at the foot of the ridge. Just above it stands Sparrenburg castle on a hilltop, and a green strip of forest reaches almost into the centre.
