Its name comes from its geography: the older part of the city sits on a ridge rising above the flat former lakebed of the Chicago area, and early travellers said the wooded high ground looked like a blue island on the horizon. Blue Island has long been a railway junction, and multiple lines, including Metra routes into downtown Chicago, pass through or near the city, adding long diagonal lines.
