Bomlitz lies in the Heidekreis district of Lower Saxony, on the western side of the Lüneburg Heath near the town of Walsrode. Its territory of around sixty-four square kilometres combines a built-up core with large areas of forest, farmland and open land. On a map the settlement appears as a mix of residential streets and the extensive, orderly footprint of industrial sites.
The village grew around industry. A gunpowder mill was established on the small river Bomlitz in the nineteenth century, and the business that became Wolff Walsrode later developed into a major producer of cellulose products and films. That history remains legible on the map, where large rectangular plots and internal roads sit beside the more irregular lanes of the older village.
In 2020 Bomlitz was merged into the town of Walsrode, though it keeps its own identity and outline.
