Seen from above, Braşov is a city of two halves. The old town sits in a tight wedge between Tâmpa mountain and the ridges to the west, its streets drawn in short, irregular lines around the broad rectangle of the Council Square. Beyond the line of the former walls, the map opens out: apartment blocks, rail yards and industrial estates spread north and east across the flat land of the Bârsa basin.
The city was settled by Transylvanian Saxons, who knew it as Kronstadt, and the medieval layout still shows their planning. To the southwest, the Schei quarter climbs a narrow valley, its lanes following the slope rather than any plan.
