Brazzaville lies on the right bank of the Congo River, where the river widens into the Pool Malebo and then narrows again before a long stretch of rapids. On the map the water is the dominant shape: a broad pale band along the city's southern and eastern edge, with Kinshasa filling the opposite shore. The city takes its name from the explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, who established a post here in 1880, and it later served as the capital of French Equatorial Africa. Its streets spread back from the river in a mix of colonial-era avenues and self-built districts on the gentle slopes inland, with the Djoué River marking the south-western edge.
