Callao sits where the coast of Lima's metropolitan area bends out into the Pacific. On the map its most striking shape is La Punta, a slim peninsula that reaches west into the ocean, with the long, bare outline of San Lorenzo Island just beyond it. The harbour lies in the shelter of that headland, and its breakwaters and piers form sharp geometric lines along the shore.
Callao has been Peru's main port since colonial times, and the star-shaped Real Felipe Fortress, built in the eighteenth century to defend it, still stands near the waterfront. Inland, Jorge Chávez International Airport, the country's main air gateway, also lies within Callao's boundaries, so the city handles both sea and air traffic for the capital.
