Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is organised by its rivers. The Taff runs through the middle of the city from north to south, passing Cardiff Castle and the long green corridor of Bute Park before reaching the bay. The Ely lies to the west and the Rhymney to the east, framing the urban area.
In the nineteenth century Cardiff became one of the world's busiest coal-exporting ports, and its docklands grew accordingly. The barrage completed in 1999 turned the tidal mudflats into a freshwater bay, now lined with offices, the Senedd and the Wales Millennium Centre. The Principality Stadium stands on the riverbank in the centre.
