Casamassima sits on the gently rising ground inland from Bari, and from above it shows two clear layers. At the centre is a compact old town of narrow lanes, packed so close that the streets look like fine cracks in a single block. Around it, later neighbourhoods follow more regular lines, and beyond them the roads run straight into open farmland.
The old centre is known locally as the blue town, because many houses in the historic quarter were traditionally painted blue.
