Charlotte Amalie curves around a deep harbour on the south coast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Headlands and small islands shape the shoreline, with Hassel Island at the harbour mouth and Water Island beyond. Behind the waterfront the land rises steeply, and the town climbs the slopes in terraces of houses and winding roads.
The historic core is a narrow strip between the waterfront and the hills. Main Street runs parallel to the harbour, and short alleys connect it to the quays. Uphill, some streets are so steep that they turn into flights of stairs, the best known being the 99 Steps. On the map, tight switchbacks on the hills contrast with the straight lines along the shore.
The town was founded under Danish rule and named after a Danish queen. It passed to the United States in 1917, and Fort Christian, its red-walled fort, still stands by the harbour.
