Coalville grew up in the nineteenth century around coal mines in north-west Leicestershire, and its name comes directly from that industry. On a map the town still shows its industrial origins. The collieries have closed, and the former Snibston mining site has become a country park. Coalville also lies within the National Forest, a long-running project to replant woodland across this part of the Midlands, and new plantations and green spaces now surround much of the town.
