The Brazilian towns of Brasiléia and Epitaciolândia stand across the river, so the map shows a cross-border urban area shaped around the water. Surrounded by Amazon rainforest, Cobija grew as a centre for rubber and later for Brazil nut collection, which remains important to the region.
