Colorado Springs sits where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, with Pikes Peak rising directly to the west. Downtown was laid out in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer on a regular grid with unusually wide streets. Since then the city has expanded in every direction the terrain allows, spreading far onto the plains east of Interstate 25 while stopping abruptly at the mountain front.
Monument Creek and Fountain Creek meet near downtown, and their green corridors cut diagonally through the grid. On the western edge, the red sandstone fins of Garden of the Gods form a park beside the foothills. The city is home to the United States Air Force Academy, and Katharine Lee Bates wrote America the Beautiful after a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak in 1893.
