Concórdia sits in the west of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, in hilly country above the Uruguay River basin. From above the town does not have a simple grid. Its streets climb and wind with the land, running along ridges, dropping into valleys and meeting at irregular junctions, so the map has a loose, organic pattern shaped by the terrain.
The town is closely tied to agriculture and food processing. The company Sadia was founded here in the 1940s, and Concórdia is still associated with pork and poultry production, including an Embrapa research centre dedicated to it. Around the urban area, rural roads spread out towards farms and small communities, winding just like the streets in town.
