Corregidor guards the entrance to Manila Bay, and its shape is easy to recognise. The high, rounded western end rises from the sea, and the land narrows into a long, low tail pointing east. Roads climb and zigzag across the high ground, then follow the narrow middle of the island toward the tail.
The island was fortified for decades and is best known for the Second World War. American and Filipino forces held it under siege until May 1942, and it was retaken in 1945. Malinta Tunnel, dug into the hill near the island's waist, served as a headquarters and hospital during the siege. Today the island is a memorial and historic site, reached by boat from Manila.
