Culemborg is a historic town in Gelderland, on the south bank of the Lek, one of the branches of the Rhine. It received town rights in the Middle Ages. Its compact old centre still shows its origins: a tight core of streets inside the line of its former fortifications, with the river and its floodplain just to the north.
From above, the old town is easy to pick out. It is a dense, irregular cluster of narrow streets and blocks with a clear outer edge where walls and moats once stood. Around it, later neighbourhoods spread out in the more open, planned patterns of the twentieth century. Canals, polder ditches and a railway line cross the flat Dutch landscape.
