Daxi sits in the southeastern part of Taoyuan, on a raised terrace above the Dahan River where the river leaves the mountains and enters the plain. From above, the old town is a compact grid of streets close to the river bluff, with newer neighbourhoods spread across the flatter land behind it. The river swings past in a wide curve, crossed by several bridges.
Daxi was once a river port for the camphor and tea trades. The prosperity of that trade can still be seen on Daxi Old Street, where the shopfronts carry ornate facades from the early twentieth century. The town is known across Taiwan for its dried tofu. The Cihu Mausoleum, the temporary resting place of Chiang Kai-shek, lies in the hills of the district to the south.
