Dili is shaped by the ground it sits on. The city runs east to west in a long, thin band between the sea and a wall of hills just behind it, so on a map the streets press against the shoreline. A waterfront road traces the curve of the bay, and the neighbourhoods behind it thin out quickly as the terrain rises.
Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste, which regained its independence in 2002. To the east, a headland ends at the Cristo Rei statue that looks back across the bay.
