Dillenburg lies in the narrow valley of the river Dill in central Hesse, with wooded hills close on both sides. The town grew beneath the Schlossberg, the hill that once carried the castle of the counts of Nassau. William of Orange, who led the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule, was born here in 1533. The link to the House of Orange-Nassau is still part of the town's identity.
On a map the valley shapes everything. The river, the railway and the main roads run side by side along the valley floor. The old town climbs the slope toward the castle hill in a tangle of short, winding lanes. Newer districts reach up side valleys and along the Dill, which gives the town a long, branching outline.
