Djelfa lies in the high steppe of central Algeria, between Algiers and the Sahara, more than a thousand metres above sea level. The town sits in a broad valley, with the ridges of the Ouled Naïl mountains, part of the Saharan Atlas, rising nearby. From above, its streets fill open, gently sloping ground with little water or forest to break them up.
The national road running south from Algiers toward Laghouat and the Sahara passes through the town and gives it a strong north–south axis. Around the older centre, planned districts of regular blocks have spread quickly in recent decades, and at the edges of the map new housing meets bare ground. The contrast between the built grid and the empty steppe gives the plan a stark clarity.
