Dmitrov is one of the oldest towns in the Moscow region. The chronicles date its founding to 1154 and credit Yuri Dolgoruky, the prince also linked to the founding of Moscow. On the map the old core is easy to find: an oval of earthen ramparts that once enclosed the kremlin, with the white Assumption Cathedral inside it. The town's main streets start from that oval.
To the east the ground falls to the Yakhroma valley, and the Moscow Canal runs through it in a long, deliberate line. Built in the 1930s to link the capital with the Volga, the canal gives the map a hard engineered edge. The river curves beside it, the rail line runs parallel, and the town sits on the higher bank above all three.
