Dodoma is in the middle of Tanzania, on a semi-arid plateau far from the coast. The city looks unusually open from above. Wide roads and generous blocks spread over flat land, and rocky granite outcrops rise here and there around the edges. Unlike older port cities, Dodoma grew from a plan, and the geometry of that plan is still easy to read.
In the 1970s Dodoma was chosen to replace Dar es Salaam as the national capital, partly because of its central location. The National Assembly meets here, and government offices have moved gradually over the following decades. The Central Railway, built during the colonial period, runs through the city, and the surrounding region is one of the few places in East Africa where wine grapes are grown.
