Dörtyol is in Hatay province in southern Turkey, near the north-eastern corner of the Mediterranean, on the shore of the Gulf of İskenderun. The town sits on a narrow coastal plain between the sea and the slopes of the Amanos Mountains, which rise steeply inland. On the map that gives it a clear shape: coastline on one side, rising ground on the other.
The name means 'four roads' in Turkish, a reminder that the town grew at a crossing point on the routes along this coast. Main roads and the coastal highway still run through it, with the older centre where they meet and newer districts stretching along the shore.
