Dokri lies in Larkana District in Sindh, on the flat alluvial plain west of the Indus. From above, the town is a compact cluster of lanes and low buildings. Canals, field boundaries and embankments form a fine geometric pattern around it, and in places the land is so flat that the irrigation channels are the strongest lines on the map.
The area is best known for being close to Mohenjo-daro, one of the largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation, whose excavated remains lie a short distance away. The same river that supported that Bronze Age city still waters the surrounding land. Rice and other crops grow in fields laid out along the channels.
