Ellesmere Port lies on the south bank of the Mersey estuary in Cheshire, and the town exists largely because of its waterways. The Shropshire Union Canal comes in from the south and ends here, at the docks where it once connected with the Mersey. Along the northern edge, the Manchester Ship Canal runs parallel to the estuary, separated from it by a narrow strip of land.
The old canal port, with its basins and warehouses, is now home to the National Waterways Museum. Industry has also shaped the map: the large Stanlow refinery lies to the east, and the Vauxhall car plant sits south of the centre. Residential neighbourhoods of mostly twentieth-century streets fill the space between these large sites.
