Évora stands on a low hill in the middle of the Alentejo plain in southern Portugal. Its historic centre is almost entirely enclosed by medieval walls, which form a rounded outline that is instantly recognisable on a map. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved historic centres in Portugal.
