Its thousands of lanes are so narrow and irregular that they look more like a texture than a street network. Fes el-Jdid, founded by the Marinids in the thirteenth century, sits to the west with its palace grounds and walls. Beyond them is the Ville Nouvelle, laid out under the French protectorate.
