Fichē is the administrative centre of the North Shewa zone in Oromia, on the high Ethiopian plateau north of Addis Ababa. From above, it is a modest town. Its main road runs through the centre, a loose grid of streets branches off on either side, and farmland on the open highland spreads all around it.
The plateau in this area is cut by dramatic gorges draining toward the Blue Nile, and the landscape changes sharply over short distances. The historic monastery of Debre Libanos, one of the most important in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, lies at the edge of one of these gorges not far from the town.
