Flint stands on the Welsh shore of the Dee estuary, facing the Wirral across wide tidal sands. It was founded by Edward I in 1277 along with its castle, the first of his fortresses in Wales. The town was laid out as a planned settlement, and traces of that original rectilinear street pattern can still be read in the centre today.
The castle is right at the water's edge, a small, compact shape where the town meets the estuary. The North Wales coast railway runs parallel to the shore and separates the streets from the marsh and mudflats.
