Foligno lies on the broad, level floor of the Valle Umbra, with the Apennine foothills rising to the east. Its historic centre forms a rough oval, once enclosed by walls and now marked by a ring of streets. The Topino river runs along the edge of the old town, and beyond it the newer districts spread out over the plain in a more open pattern.
Unlike most Umbrian towns, which sit on hilltops, Foligno is almost entirely flat, and it has long been a crossroads for roads and railways across central Italy. In 1472 the first printed edition of Dante's Divine Comedy was produced here. Locals also like the old saying that the town is the centre of the world.
