Gouda grew where the small Gouwe river meets the Hollandse IJssel, and water still shapes its map. The historic centre is a compact oval. Canals run through it and a ring of singels, the old moat-like waterways, runs around it. Narrow streets follow the canal lines, and bridges cross them at short intervals, so the old town looks like a set of islands.
At the centre is the Markt, a large triangular square with the free-standing Gothic city hall in the middle, one of the oldest in the Netherlands. The town is known worldwide for the cheese named after it, traditionally weighed and traded here. Nearby stands Sint-Janskerk, the long church famous for its sixteenth-century stained glass windows.
