Grenoble occupies a remarkably flat valley floor surrounded by three mountain massifs: the Chartreuse to the north, the Vercors to the west and the Belledonne to the east. On a map the city fills the plain almost edge to edge, and the mountains appear as blank space pressing in from every side. The Isère River curves along the north of the centre, with the Drac joining from the south.
Above the old town, on the Isère's north bank, the Bastille fortress sits on a steep spur, reached by the cable car with its spherical cabins. Grenoble hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics and is home to a large university and major research institutions, with the main campus spreading across the eastern suburbs. The writer Stendhal was born here.
