Griffith is the largest centre of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the Riverina district of New South Wales. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, the American architects who also planned Canberra. Despite the similarity, the city takes its name from Arthur Griffith, a state minister for public works, rather than from the architect.
The Griffins' plan is clear on the map: curving streets and circular elements around the centre, with avenues radiating outward rather than following a simple grid. Beyond the town, the land is divided into a regular patchwork of irrigated farms, orchards and vineyards, crossed by straight channels that carry water drawn from the Murrumbidgee River.
Migration from Italy, much of it in the twentieth century, shaped Griffith's culture, food and wine industry, which remains one of the most important in Australia.
