Haifa is built on the northern end of Mount Carmel, where the ridge drops steeply to the Mediterranean and the broad Bay of Haifa curves away to the north. The topography shapes everything on the map. The best-known feature is the Bahá'í Gardens, a line of terraces descending the mountainside around the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb.
