Haomen is the county seat of Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, in the northeast of Qinghai province. It sits in the Datong River valley, where the Qilian Mountains open into a wide basin at close to three thousand metres. From above, the town is a small, tight cluster of streets on flat valley ground, with the mountains holding their distance on both sides.
The street pattern is simple and easy to read. A few main roads carry traffic through the centre, and shorter blocks fill the spaces between them.
