Hashimoto sits in the northeast of Wakayama Prefecture, in the valley of the Kinokawa River. The terrain decides its shape. Built-up areas run in a long ribbon beside the river, and forested hills rise on both sides. From above, the town is a narrow band of streets following the water, not a round city with a centre.
The town has long been a stop on the way to Mount Kōya, the mountain monastery complex founded by the monk Kūkai. Railway lines meet here and roads branch into the hills. That gives Hashimoto the feel of a threshold between the lowland valley and the sacred mountain country to the south.
