Heilbad Heiligenstadt lies in the valley of the Leine in northwest Thuringia and is the main town of the Eichsfeld. From above, you can still follow the medieval core in the curve of its streets, a compact oval that the ring of later development never fully erased. The river and the railway run along the valley floor, and the forested slopes close in on both sides.
The Eichsfeld has been Catholic for centuries, and Heiligenstadt's skyline reflects it: several Gothic churches stand within a few hundred metres of each other. The sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider was born here, and the writer Theodor Storm lived in the town while serving as a judge. The name Heilbad marks its later role as a spa, with Kneipp cures and parks along the edge of the old town.
