Himi faces Toyama Bay at the base of the Noto Peninsula. From above, the city is a strip of streets between the sea and a line of low hills. The harbour sits at the centre of the waterfront, and rivers run down from the hills into the bay. Roads follow the coast north toward the peninsula and south toward Takaoka.
Himi is famous throughout Japan for its winter yellowtail, known as Himi kanburi, caught in fixed nets in the bay.
