Huayin sits at the eastern end of the Guanzhong plain in Shaanxi, where the flat farmland of the Wei River valley meets the steep northern face of the Qinling range. The town's streets form a modest grid on level ground, and the mountains begin almost immediately to the south. That gives the map a strong horizontal division between plain and peaks.
The town is known for Huashan, one of China's Five Great Mountains. Its granite summits are famous for steep stairways cut into the rock and narrow cliff paths.
