Hurlingham lies in the western part of Greater Buenos Aires. It is one of the partidos that make up the continuous urban area around the capital. Its map is a patchwork of rectangular grids, each aligned slightly differently, meeting along railway lines and main roads. Larger green spaces, sports grounds and clubs sit between them and open up the otherwise dense suburban fabric.
The name comes from the Hurlingham Club, founded by British residents in the late nineteenth century and named after the club in London. Polo, golf and other British sports took root here, and the club grounds still show on the map as a broad open area. The railway shaped the district's growth, and neighbourhoods formed around the stations along the line.
