Igualada lies in the interior of Catalonia, about sixty kilometres west of Barcelona, and is the capital of the Anoia comarca. The town sits in a basin surrounded by low hills, with the Anoia river running along its edge. Near the river, the tanners' district known as the Rec preserves the old pattern of workshops and narrow lanes built along an irrigation channel that fed the tanneries.
